Establishing the Search and Rescue Team in Badakshan
FOCUS Afghanistan has organized a number of initiatives that empower women to support national disaster risk reduction and relief efforts.
With the support of The United States Agency for International Development, FOCUS Afghanistan has established the first ever advanced Search and Rescue Team (SART) in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan. The team comprising of 24 volunteers 10 women, have been trained in search and rescue techniques and are ready to respond in the event of disasters throughout the province.
The SART training provides comprehensive training with many technical components that include:
- Physical and technical searches of collapsed buildings
- Rope rescue
- Casualty handling
- Lifting and rigging
- The use of snake-eye cameras
- The use of disc cutters
- The use of thermal imaging cameras
FOCUS Afghanistan’s work in this area has gained international recognition. As one of the key partners in DRR, FOCUS Afghanistan – representing the international community – addressed the audience on the International Disaster Risk Reduction Day on October 17, 2012 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The event was celebrated by the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority and the United Nations.
